Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on the Japanese PlayStation Blog on 13 October that a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition goes on sale in Japan on Thursday 19 November for ¥55,000 including tax. A matching Midnight Black disc drive comes out the same day for ¥11,980.

Like the existing Japan-only Digital Edition, it's region-locked: it only works with the console language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account registered in Japan. Sony's spec sheet lists it as model CFI-2200B02S, with an 825GB SSD and the same core hardware as other PS5 models.

Pre-orders open today, 20 October, at PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan.

In the same post, Sony also noted that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will be sold only as downloads. Disc versions of games released before then will keep working.
