Shigeru Miyamoto, 73, is one of eight people named for this year's Order of Culture, Japan's top honour for contributions to culture, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported on 23 October. IGN and Yomiuri report he is the first video game developer to receive it.

Miyamoto created Mario and played key roles in other Nintendo series, including The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox. He joined Nintendo in 1977 and is now its Executive Fellow. Past recipients of the award include film director Akira Kurosawa and fashion designer Issey Miyake.

The Emperor of Japan presents the award on 3 November, Japan's Culture Day.

"As I often point out, I don't create games on my own," Miyamoto told reporters, in IGN's translation. "This award is the result of working together with a great number of people, so I will accept it on their behalf."
