Grand Theft Auto VI's map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, Rockstar told Edge magazine, as reported by GameSpot and Insider Gaming. Counting all of Leonida's land, the total is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. Rockstar didn't give a size in square miles.
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut says the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than any previous Rockstar game, and that size wasn't the only goal. "Every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others. You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location," he says. He adds that there are places in the game he still hasn't seen himself.
Garbut also spoke about the weight of a 13-year wait since GTA 5. "We can't just trot out something that's what people might expect, or that was the easy thing to do," he says. "We've not compromised on the scale, the detail, the interactivity, the story, the open world. I feel like we've built a pyramid on Everest."
The same Edge feature detailed the Criminal Profile system, which Photite covered on 31 Oct, and Photite reported on 30 Oct that French duo Justice is scoring the game. GTA 6 is due on 19 Nov on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
